Implant Placement or Extractions:
Be sure to use your post operative medication exactly as it is prescribed.
If you have sutures in your mouth, do not take them out even if they annoy your tongue or cheek. Some types of sutures are made to fall out on their own within ten days to two weeks. If this type of suture is not used, Dr. Matheson will remove your sutures at one of your post operative appointments.
Stick to soft foods for a couple of weeks and especially avoid small hard foods such as nuts and chips. Do not suck on straws, lollipops, cigarettes, or anything that can cause negative pressure in your mouth for the first 2 weeks. Make sure to eat well. Maintaining proper nutrition (even though it is soft food nutrition) will help you in the healing process.
It is normal to see some swelling, especially if your gums were manipulated during the procedure. The swelling will begin to decrease by the third or fourth day after the extraction was done or the implant was placed.
If a temporary crown or healing abutment was immediately connected to your implant avoid touching it with your fingers or food whenever possible for the first month. Also be careful to brush the area delicately.
Be certain to follow any specific instructions that Dr. Matheson gives you. If you have any questions regarding your post operative care, don’t hesitate to call Dr. Matheson at work (480-888-8123) or after hours on his cell phone (480-620-8749).
